Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel launched her first fragrance in 1921. She envisioned a revolutionary fragrance to represent the complexity of the modern women that celebrated the feminine spirit of the 1920’s. Chanel commissioned chemist Ernest Beaux to formulate this radical perfume for her. She picked the fifth vial in the line-up of potential fragrances because it was to be presented along with her dress collection on the fifth of May, the fifth month of the year. She thought the fifth vial would be lucky, and so it was. Chanel No5 was an instant success and has remained an iconic perfume for the last nearly one-hundred years.

Marilyn Monroe, the embodiment of complex femininity, revealed herself as a Chanel fan in 1952 when asked in an interview for Life Magazine what she wore to bed, to which she responded “Chanel No5, of course.” Her endorsement further immersed Chanel perfume in titillating mystery and unattainable luxury.
